How to Calculate Weight Loss Percentage
The percentage of weight lost can easily be calculated by dividing the number of pounds you have lost by your starting weight and then multiplying this number by 100. For example, if your starting body weight was 200 pounds and your current weight is 180 pounds, subtract 180 from 200 to get the number of pounds lost, which in this case is 20 pounds. Now divide 20 by 200 to get 0.1. Then multiply 0.1 by 100 to convert it to a percentage, which in this case is 10 percent.
Losing Weight the Healthy Way
Whether you are looking to lose 10 pounds or 100 pounds, weight loss should always be done in a healthy fashion. While many desire to lose weight as fast as possible, this can actually be quite unhealthy for your body. The American Heart Association recommends that no more than 1 to 2 pounds of weight be lost a week. Losing more than this increases your risk of metabolic conditions, promotes unhealthy eating habits as well as leaves you feeling fatigued due a lack of calories. In addition, losing weight too fast increases your risk of regaining unwanted weight back faster.

Instead of focusing on losing weight, turn your ambitions toward leading a healthy lifestyle in general. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet and exercise regularly. Stay away from fad diets or diets that place emphasis on eating only certain types of foods. Keep track of your weight loss percentage by recording it daily in a notebook. Then set a goal for weight loss, for example to lose 10 percent of your weight in two months. If you are overweight or obese, even a small reduction in weight can be very beneficial. According to the Centers for Disease Control, just a 5-percent to 10-percent reduction in weight can have a positive effect on your health, including lower cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose levels.
