When you first bring your new baby home having a consistent schedule is impossible: you sleep whenever you can, often for short periods at a time and sitting down to a meal is a forgotten luxury. Also, depending on whether you delivered naturally or via cesarean, it can be anywhere from 4-8 weeks before you are cleared for normal activities, so start slow. For the first few weeks you should focus more on your diet than exercise. Aim to get in a few minutes a day of light stretching or walking so you get used to a schedule, but focus on your meal plans to help you get the process going. You should start slow and consider your diet to make your pregnancy weight loss worthy.
Figuring out what to eat
You probably have a good idea of what food you should be eating, the problem is you probably don’t have the time or energy to prepare all those healthy foods. Even a salad, if it has too many ingredients can be too much for a new mom at times. In the early stages of motherhood you will be eating on the go a lot, so it’s important to stock your house with simple, healthy foods that will contribute to and promote safe and effective weight loss. Try to eat as balanced as possible, focusing on fruits and vegetables, which contain anti-oxidants and are low in calories and fat. They can also be eaten a variety of ways, including as shakes, which are great for when there is no time. Then each day make it a point to sit down and eat- even if it’s for only 10 minutes. Here are some great options for those time you really can’t stop to eat a full meal:
- nuts
- hard-boiled eggs
- yogurts
- low-fat string cheese
- whole grain cereals
- nuts
Try to add some good fats, like from wild salmon or lean chicken to round out your diet for the best results
Learning how to exercise
Exercising can be impossible for new moms: even once your cleared to workout finding the time and energy can be beyond difficult. Don’t despair: there are ways to get your exercise routine on track to achieve healthy weight loss you just have to be determined. Try following these guidelines:
- During the first week aim to move around for about 10 minutes a day: take a walk around the block or to the local store. You want your body, which is still healing, to get used to the idea of exercise without overdoing it. This is a critical time because your still adjusting to motherhood tired, so stick with it. Once you do this for a few days you will feel energized instead of tired and want to do more.
- During weeks 2 and 3 aim to walk for 20 minutes a day and incorporate some light stretching exercises. You want to begin the process of doing a total of 30 minutes of daily exercise: break it up and do it throughout the day if your really pressed for time, but don’t slack off.
- For most women week 4 is when you will be cleared by your doctor and can begin to workout. You don’t have to go to the gym to get in a good workout: get a set of 5 pound dumbbells and workout out in your house for 20 to 30 minutes of eight training 3 days a week. If you cannot work out yet ask your physician about doing some lightweight exercises and continue to walk.
You should speak with your physician before implementing any new plan to make sure you are physically able to start. Being anew mom is a beautiful time: it shouldn’t be overshadowed by weight loss concerns. Eat sensibly and stay moving to see that you achieve your post baby weight loss in no time.
